PREFECTURE OF DRAMA

The Prefecture of Drama is found in north-eastern utmost the NE of Greek territory, in the borders with Bulgaria . It constitutes the richer prefecture side of natural environment. It is encompassed by the mountains of Rodopi in the northern, Menikion and Orvilou in westwards, Pangee in the southern and mountain of Basin in Eastern. The mountainous volume that dominates in the taller point of horizon is the Baldy, is the "mountain symbol of" Drama.

Administratively it comes under the Region of Eastern Macedonia - Thrace and is divided in eight municipalities (Drama, Down Nevrokopi, Prosotsani, Nikiforos, Paranesti, Doxato, Kalampakj, Sitagron and a community (Sidironero).

The prefecture is substantially rural. There are big cultivable extents in the plains that are extended mainly in the southern part. The complete exploitation of aquatic resources of (particularly rivers Nestos and Aggitis, sources of Superscript) and the use of modern methods of culture have improved considerably, the last years, the rural economy. The products that are cultivated are mainly cereals, cotton, industrial tomato, tobacco, vines, fruits and vegetables. From know nest, however, the products of the region are beans and potatoes in Down Nevrokopi, while the vine-growing the last years acquires a new dynamics, with the known already eponymous wines of Drama of international recognition.

Important place in the prefecture has the veterinary surgeon production, where dominates the small familial exploitation of traditional form are mainly raised ovine, cattle and pigs, while modern units produce exceptional quality cheese-dairy products. In a prefecture, however, that its bigger part is covered by forests, it could be absent the forestall production. The region allocates the richer forests in Greece . The Mainer forest products emanate from the forests the Erythrelati, pine, beech, oak and white which engross almost at exclusivity by the local industries of timber.

The bigger, however, economic interest presents the prefecture in the sector of marble. Today it constitutes the more basic element of his growth. Units of excavation and treatment of marble, from biggest and modern the country, have installed themselves in the region presenting big export activity to the Arabic countries, Europe , the USA and Japan .

The subsoil of prefecture encompasses also appreciable mining wealth in industrially mainly mining. Important are the layers of manganese in underground Baldy Mountain , the layers of uranium and industrial mining in the region Paranesti, as well as the lignite field that has been located in the region Mavroleuki.

In the capital of prefecture are assembled the basic services of administration, education, care and sports. In the city there are exist modern hospital, network of athletic installations with closed gyms, swimming sports facilities, grounds, as well as the department of Silviculture of Technological Educational Institution Kavala. A network of cultural infrastructures with exhibition spaces, libraries, conservatoire and room of cinema provides, in collaboration with the active local cultural associations, variety of events for the maintenance of local traditions and the appointment of modern forms of art.

In the prefecture we will reach road and railway via Thessalonica, coastal via Kavala and air via the airport "Great Alexander of" Chrisoupolis.

MUNICIPALITY OF DOXATO

The Prosperity and the wealth of Doxato from the euphoria of fields with the good production of tobaccos were well known in the prefecture of Drama , at the years of Ottoman domination and up to 1913, when destroyed by the withdrawing Bulgarians.

The Doxato constituted small city with his brilliant buildings and with the progress and the culture of its residents.

The repeated destructions and slaughters that it suffered Doxato from the Bulgarians, stood capable to impede the creativity of residents for progress and prosperity.
